American Beech — New York, USA

At the far end of Long Island’s North Fork, past a myriad of farm stands, several charming villages and miles of vineyards, you’ll find American Beech, tucked in the back of Greenport’s Stirling Square. The hotel — which gets its name from the 75-year-old tree in its courtyard — is housed in a 19th century carriage house that has been transformed by Dan Mazzarini.
Briefed by owner Brent Pelton to create a ‘seaside chic’ space that lacks pretension, Mazzarini — founding partner of New York-based firm BHDM — took his cues from the town’s heritage as a whaling village and its still active boating culture. ‘We wanted there to be a certain ease and casualness to the whole property,’ says Mazzarini. ‘Boating and sailing are big parts of Greenport's history, and a personal interest of Brent’s, so we used that as a catalyst for the design.’
In the restaurant, nautical accents like rope detailing, stripes and even boat cleats are used throughout. The palette is light and airy, lending to the easy-breezy vibe that Pelton and Mazzarini were hoping for, and which also complements the costal American fare.
Located above the restaurant are five beautifully streamlined guest rooms designed to feel like beachside bungalows. Each includes a kitchenette and a wine refrigerator and guests have access to complementary bicycles as well as priority reservations at the increasingly popular restaurant.
