Hotel Monument — Barcelona, Spain

Two is better than one, seems to be the mantra behind Condes Hotel Group’s decision to split its flagship property on Barcelona’s Passeig de Gracia to create Monument, a new urban resort that smartly also ups the brand’s luxe factor.
While the original hotel has now been re-jigged to fit in one of the two buildings it occupied, the other building - a grand pre-modernist structure built by architect Josep Vilaseca in 1895 - has been transformed into a boutique haven that comprises 84 spacious rooms; three dining venues including Michelin star restaurant Lasarte; a flower shop and a mini spa.
Originally lead by celebrated local architect Oscar Tusquets, the project was then completed by duo Tote Moreno and Carles Bassó along with interior designer Mercè Borrell, who meticulously restored the neo-gothic inspired building - the former residence of industrialist Enric Batllo - to showcase the best of its original details, including the building’s original grand marble staircase. In the rooms, exposed recovered brickwork is tempered with lashings of oak that cloaks the remaining walls, ceiling and floor, while butter-soft leather headboards add a touch of plushness.
Located on the city’s main shopping drag, the property’s faultless location further underlines the Condes Group’s mission to create a ‘landmark hotel’ and expand its luxury offerings.
