Nothing captures that carefree, endless summer feeling quite like sun-drenched rooftop drinking. Newly opened in New York City is Tiki Tabu, a perfectly curated, Hawaiian-themed cocktail bar from the Pomeranc brothers (Jason, Michael and Lawrence) and the Sixty Hotels team.
Located atop the Sixty LES hotel in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the kitsch, tropical escape comes complete with bamboo walls, collages of 1960s surf pin-ups, palm-printed sofas and a mural painted by artist Gilbane Peck. To match, mixologists Jim Kearns and Jon Neidich – who previously served time at favourites such as Death & Co and Tijuana Picnic – have devised an evocative menu of drinkables, such as frozen fresh fruit daiquiris and piña coladas in tiki mugs and scorpion fish bowls, along with more obscure tiki classics like the Samoan Typhoon – a heady brew comprised of rum, vodka, pineapple and apple juice mixed with honey, passion fruit and fresh lime juice.
This resort experience would not be complete without tantalising morsels of food to accompany it either. Blue Ribbon, who operates the hotel’s restaurant below, has created a special bar menu including sweet and sour meatballs and wasabi honey chicken wings.
Tiki Tabu is open until the end of September – a cheery prediction for a long summer by its makers, perhaps, but a welcome one.
