Disassociating the regular trip to the dentist from one’s respective phobias can be hard work, but Japanese practice KUU have attempted just that with their latest Yamate Dental Clinic project in Himeji City.

Aiming for a calmingly harmonious and intimate space that de-stresses customers through the power of design, the architects created a simple two-storey glass and concrete geometric form, hosting cosy and private naturally lit treatment rooms, all looking out towards the garden through vertical slits.

A year after the final touches were added, extra space and an extension to the original building was needed, so KUU added a low building that frames the outdoor areas, enhancing the feeling of enclosure.
