Raf Simons
Simons is one of the few fashion forward-thinking designers, so often his work can be almost impossible to describe. Called Material World (Theres No Path to Follow), according to the designer, the collection should be read as an incitement to (re)discover the world - the real world: meaning exploration and the wandering backpacker.
He deconstructed and rebuilt functional garments and took Velcro fastenings and toggle ended drawstrings to create new shape. Trousers were pleated and baggy at the thigh and then through geometric cutting almost drainpipe from knee down. Drawstrings were applied at the base of T-shirts and coats giving voluminous shape, and in parallel or diagonal rows to control the volume of fabrics in novel ways. Colours contrasted between the muted and the bright.
Simons developed backpacks with specialists Esstpack, in tough durable Cordura often lazer-cut with a geometric pattern. The bags came extra large, with a multitude of muted and bright coloured webbing straps. The same webbing was combined with patent leather for shoes and sandals with geometric soles.
