Dolce e Gabbana
Developing their Christo-style ‘wrapping’ first explored last season, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana shrouded dresses, tops, knits and coats in layers of tulle and net. The result, in addition to creating interesting volume and shape, was accentuated when they smothered Venetian style brocade and hand-painted prints, under sheer and coloured layers, giving added depth to the rich patterns beneath. Milan has been all about layers of transparency and this is a good interpretation of the trend.
They continued their art theme with hand painting directly on the finished garments themselves. The ‘art’ was inspired by Monet and Jackson Pollock, the latter hardly news as Hedi Slimane did that for his last season at Dior this winter. Yet, the Monet made for very pretty dresses (the whole collection showed a welcome romantic, softer and sweeter side to the brand) and with painting both under and over the tulle, silk net and organza they certainly made it their own.
