‘A careless and amused group of smart boys waits for the start of a burlesque show,’ or so read the program notes accompanying the Valentino menswear presentation. 43 models leant against a gleaming semi circular white bar whilst the dancers strutted their magnificent stuff on its top. When the girls left to powder their noses, what was left was a line up of all the looks from the show.
It was a great idea, we got to see everything at once and at the same time had an instant overview of the entire collection. It was pure Valentino, and that meant effortless elegance, the man and his brand DNA combined.
It went from work to play, day to night and smart to casual, well almost. Valentino’s idea of casual still includes a tie (slim and knitted; right on track) or perhaps a white silk roll neck and of course a jacket, possibly a slim little navy silk and cashmere blazer, a neat squared off pocket chief and alligator loafers but no socks.
