Alexander McQueen, Spring/Summer '08
Alexander McQueen
The Picina Cozzi, a public swimming pool built by Luigi Secchi in 1934 was the venue for the McQueen show. The show was called Please Sur 2008, and surf, adventure and travel were all part of an eclectic mix of inspiration for this collection. According to the designer he wanted to celebrate the idea of sun-kissed freedom of expression and the way summer pulls different groups of young men to seek adventure, from surfers, to travellers to Coney Island gang members.
This meant 50s styling in the form of oversized jackets, skinny peg style pants, baseball jackets and oversized polka dots as well as glossy quiffs. It also meant a backpack big enough to carry a boogie board, and pants and tops cut from wetsuit fabric. It appears urban surf is a bit of a theme in Milan what with this and Burberry yesterday. McQueen took all these elements and mixed them up.
A McQueen show would not be complete without decoration, so the baseball jackets and blazers came with tiger prints and the surfing gear was embroidered with flowers. There were plenty of photographic prints, from flamingos to collages of travel snapshots, presumably documenting some imaginary journey in the designers mind.
