Versace, Spring Summer '08
Versace
The Versace Man striding the runway on Saturday night in Teatro Versace, the converted theatre that is the brands new show venue, was a far cry from the one we are familiar with. Where traditionally his shirt was unbuttoned, plunging down to the navel and beyond, exposing perfect tanned, waxed pecs and abs, this season he was almost primly buttoned up and fastened with a seriously skinny tie or, as an alternative, wearing a cowl necked knit that resembled a scarf. Despite the lack of flesh, Donatella Versace still ensured her men maintained their Versace sex appeal, deeply rooted in the brands DNA, with figure hugging pants and slim tailoring.
Jackets were either one or two button, including a new two button double breast, with collars so narrow they nearly disappeared all together, leaving just a high breaking revere. Versace offered plenty of new fabrications for a style that can accommodate climatic variations, meaning illogical temperatures and global warming. They included Japanese cotton, coated with a layer of silk protein, lightweight wool that appeared heavier than it was and silver cashmere mink.
A Versace show would not be complete without some great leather jackets and this season they came in pale grey, white and glossy burgundy- colours that gave a hint of the 80s. The shows most covetable garment was a short double-breasted leather blazer in dark blue.
