Fab 40: Flat, Berlin, by J Mayer H
Read the Article: 032c Museum Store, Berlin.
Mayer H made his name as a scourge of the conventional façade, twisting the steel and glass palette of commercial modernism into extravagant forms that reference both the bold graphic experiments of the 70s and the patterns and forms of digital design. Although his latest work is a residential interior, there's no sign he's lost his penchant for visual excess.
This new apartment in central Berlin was built for a family of art lovers, its flowing floor plan exaggerated by all-encompassing ultra bold aubergine and green super-graphics that set up expressionist angles everywhere you look. Built-in cupboards are concealed within the graphic forms, while large pieces of furniture can be rolled around the space ('a zone of potentiality', as the architect puts it) to reconfigure it on a daily basis. The external glass walls mean this dazzling space is never dark, creating a 'visual laboratory' for the adventurous owners.
