Following hot on the heels of The Hoxton hotels' Brooklyn arrival is the opening of its second North American property in the hipster mecca, Portland, Oregon. Situated in the city’s storied Old Town Chinatown neighbourhood, The Hoxton in Portland occupies a building that dates back to 1906.

As historic as its surroundings may be, the hotel could not be more in tune with what today’s urban travellers are after. All of its 119 rooms have all been designed in-house by Ennismore Design Studio and feature elegant finishes inspired by the North-West modernism movement, which was hugely popular on the West Coast in the 1960s.

Decked out in rich walnut paneling, yet drenched in natural light, thanks to large generous windows, each room is filled with ceramics by Clay Factor, books curated by the hotel’s local community and configured to maximise on space. Guests not only receive an emergency breakfast bag delivered to their door in the mornings, but can also stock up their room’s mini fridge with local goodies at the hotel’s shop, respectably priced at supermarket prices.

For more substantial eating, the hotel’s three restaurants should cater to all other requirements. All-day dining eaterie, La Neta, specialises in Mexican-inspired cuisine while using locally sourced ingredients. The relaxed vibe continues up at the hotel’s rooftop taqueria, Tope, where tacos and other Mexican street fare are paired with a mescal-oriented cocktail list and views across the city. The basement bar, unnamed for its discretion, focuses on more creative cocktails built around rice-based spirits, teas and Asian ingredients. Accompanied by late-night, seasonal American-Chinese grub, it’s a fitting tribute to its surrounding locale.

Opening soon is a multi-functional space that’s been called The Apartment. Comprised of a number of individually designed rooms, which are served by a communal pantry stocked with snacks, this versatile meeting space works well for private events, large meetings and milestone celebrations alike.
