The Hudson Valley in upstate New York is already famed for its many hidden gems and nature-oriented getaways, yet the arrival of the Hotel Kinsley in Kingston is set to herald a fresh wave of visitors with its tempting combination of style, design and culinary cache.

Located about two hours’ drive from Manhattan, the hotel occupies four historic buildings, dating from 1688 to the late 19th century, in the Uptown Stockade District, that have been meticulously rehabilitated and restored. A former bank building serves as the hotel’s main gathering space, while also housing a treatment room and sauna, as well as its signature restaurant, bar and upstairs lounge, operated by restaurateur Taavo Somer, which will make the most of the region’s bounty of seasonal and local ingredients.

The 35 rooms are spread over two other buildings – one with a grand staircase, lounge and rooms with built-in fireplaces, and the other that boasts a ground-floor retail space as well as an outdoor deck that will both open later this year.

The buildings’ interiors, which pick up on each structure’s unique architectural details, original tin ceilings and antique tile work, have been created by Studio Robert McKinley, who has added a Scandinavian minimalism, colourful folkloric accents and a mix of custom and vintage furniture to bring warmth to each space.

Next year, a former single-family cottage, brimming with historic details like stained glass, scallop shingles and original cornices, will open and house a further eight guestrooms.
