There’s a new reason to visit the city of Durham, North Carolina. Already home to Duke University and the Rafael Vinoly-designed Nasher Museum of Art, the city recently welcomed the beautifully put-together Durham Hotel, which opened in its thriving Triangle region.
Set within a mid-century bank building that was carefully converted and redesigned by the Los Angeles-based firm Commune Design, The Durham Hotel comprises 53 guest rooms, one sprawling penthouse suite and an eponymous restaurant, an outdoor terrace and rooftop bar.
Spread over six floors, the hotel is a sumptuous mélange of colours and materials. Boldly patterned floor tiles and rugs are offset by geometric, mid-century-style furniture, both in the hotel’s shared spaces and in guestrooms.
Locally made snacks are stocked in-room, along with bespoke blankets made by fellow North Carolinans, Raleigh Denim and a coffee programme by Durham’s Counter Culture Coffee. Head to the rooftop for picture perfect city views, where a programme of special events, ranging from movie screenings and musical showcases to morning yoga and even oyster roasts will be available.
