New York Design Week 2018 preview
Although following hot on the heels of Salone del Mobile on the design calendar, NYCxDesign (11–23 May) has stayed the course to become a vibrant, inspiring showcase of American design and creativity. This year’s iteration is set to be especially dynamic with a slew of independent designers and collectives debuting new wares on their own terms and turf. Even the behemoth International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the week’s original anchor, has shaken things up this year. Here are some of the highlights in store for the week. Writer: Pei-ru Keh
After four years of creating their own design destination by bringing exciting young talent together, Sight Unseen has refocused this year’s efforts around a central theme: cross-disciplinary collaboration. Eschewing the usual fair format of individual brand presentations, Sight Unseen Offsite has instead gone for one group exhibition as its centrepiece, while also pairing designers with a host of satellite venues, such as 3.1 Philip Lim and Opening Ceremony, scattered around downtown New York. Touching on areas as varied as food, fashion and film, 2018’s edition is set to break the mold.
