New York Design Week 2018 preview
Although following hot on the heels of Salone del Mobile on the design calendar, NYCxDesign (11–23 May) has stayed the course to become a vibrant, inspiring showcase of American design and creativity. This year’s iteration is set to be especially dynamic with a slew of independent designers and collectives debuting new wares on their own terms and turf. Even the behemoth International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the week’s original anchor, has shaken things up this year. Here are some of the highlights in store for the week. Writer: Pei-ru Keh
‘Furnishing Utopia’, the joint homage to Shaker design values lead by Studio Gorm, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio and Chris Specce, returns with a third iteration devoted to daily chores. Presented together with Design Within Reach and the Norwegian Consulate of New York, the new collection has been designed by 24 international studios that have created objects, which turn tedious tasks into mindful rituals. Accompanied by a visual and sound installation, the exhibition will include objects from several new designers joining the project this year, such as Katrin Greilling, MSDS, Earnest Studio and Shigeki Fujishiro.
