Saint Laurent A/W 2014
Hedi Slimane once again prefaced his Saint Laurent Paris men's show with a slick picture book, choosing a plethora of subversive and darkly comic sketches by the New York artist Raymond Pettibon to serve as the invitation. Pettibon's links to rock 'n' roll run deep (his album covers for Sonic Youth and Black Flag are iconic), forming a vital subtext to the sonic and aesthetic story of Slimane's Autumn 2014 show and its gritty mix of varsity punk, layered with uptown polish. With hands plunged deep in high-set pockets, models and musicians skidded along in a slim-but-squared Teddy Boy silhouette set on stovepipe denim and creepers. This editor saw touches of Patrick Bateman's bad-ass banker in the macs and trenches Slimane styled with knotted scarves, though Slimane's character strode defiantly back into Bowie territory by the finale, with opulent tuxedo options flashing by in pink glitter, fine chain embroideries and club stripe sequins.
