Sarah Morris’ spellbinding ‘Strange Magic’
The artist paints an intoxicating portrait of the dark side of production in her latest film
British artist Sarah Morris is best known for her colourful, geometric abstract paintings and meticulously crafted film portraits of cities. For the latest edition of Art Basel’s offshoot exhibition Unlimited, the artist cast her special brand of visual magic over fairgoers with her latest film. ‘Strange Magic’ - first unveiled at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in October last year – traces an unlikely spectrum of subjects, from French prostitutes to Dior’s fragrance factory, all set against an eerie soundtrack scored by fellow artist Liam Gillick. ‘It all comes down to production,’ says the artist of the work. ‘The production of space, the production of brands, the production of art. The production of dreams and desire, paradoxically intangible at the end of the day.’ Film courtesy of White Cube
