Following in the footsteps of its older sibling on Rue du Mont Thabor, Kinugawa Matignon also bills itself as a contemporary Izakaya. Located near Rond Point des Champs Elysées in Paris’ Golden Triangle, the restaurant has again been designed by French architects Gilles & Boissier, who created a modern Japanese blend mixed with sharp, graphic details and soft, sleek furnishings. ‘We wanted the restaurant to feel altogether simple and complex, to play on impressive volumes and minute detailing, on rough textures, graphic artwork and vivid colours,’ explain the duo. In the kitchen, Toyofumi Ozuru – executive chef of The Black Code Group that also owns Orient Extrême – creates surprising flavours, producing a menu that incorporates old hits such as lamb ribs with red miso and scallops with fresh additions such as Yellow Tail carpaccio with yuzu, green peppers and coriander.
