New York Design Week 2018 preview

Although following hot on the heels of Salone del Mobile on the design calendar, NYCxDesign (11–23 May) has stayed the course to become a vibrant, inspiring showcase of American design and creativity. This year’s iteration is set to be especially dynamic with a slew of independent designers and collectives debuting new wares on their own terms and turf. Even the behemoth International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the week’s original anchor, has shaken things up this year. Here are some of the highlights in store for the week. Writer: Pei-ru Keh

Brooklyn Designs

Although the most talked about borough in New York City, Brooklyn has never featured as prominently on the design trail as it promises to do this year. Its pioneering design showcase, Brooklyn Designs, moves to a new home this year: the Brooklyn Museum, where it will kick off the opening weekend of NYCxDesign. In these new digs, the show will include work from over 50 brands, including the Red Hook-based furniture studio Token, who celebrates 10 years of work. There will also be a makers’ marketplace, dynamic programming and an exhibition of historic ceramics from the museum’s decorative arts collection. Pictured: Kiki low table by Token
