New beauty spot Buller and Rice cuts salon plastic waste in east London
London’s new hair salon, Buller and Rice is just what you want from a neighbourhood salon. Stylist and colourist Anita Rice started out, and still has one foot, in London’s Shoreditch with her Cheshire Street salon Ralph and Rice. Partner in decentralising is Stephen Buller, formerly of Spitalfield’s Pimps and Pinups. The pair, with their tattoos and retro 50s flair, have all the cultural clout required to hold down a snipping career in east London, but are also growing up, and have decided to refine and further embed their environmental leanings in a stylish, sustainable address, serving fellow mellowing hipsters.
Situated next to Newington Green’s landmark French bakery, the Belle Epoque Patisserie, the new salon has been designed sympathetically (original floor tiling has been kept and it’s colour palette worked into the soft furnishings) and sustainably. Rice had previously worked with Hackney studio Lozi Design for custom fittings in her Cheshire Street salon and here at Buller and Rice they collaborate again, stepping up the ecological focus with the stations made from compressed hay, using no-waste cutting methods, and yoghurt pot terrazzo from Smile Plastics, mixed with oak and walnut-look ply. The hair products come from Davines, the Italian haircare brand with a bucket-load of green credentials, and the salon will offer a refilling station to encourage single use plastic.
The soft furnishings and wall-hangings come largely from LA-based art brand BFBG bringing a hip, homely edge. Book in for cuts and colour consistent with the maturing hipster atmosphere, including Davines’ colouring technique, flamboyage, for supernatural sun-kissed flashes through the hair.
And because everyone likes to kick back when having a haircut, teas and coffees come from local firm, Dark Arts Coffee, natural wines on offer are from Hackney’s Yield and beers come from Deviant and Dandy. We’d happily stay all day.
