Perhaps it was a subtle hint when Hardy Amies' design director Mehmet Ali chose the label's Savile Row basement as the setting for his A/W 2014 show yesterday, in an outing he called 'The Monogrammed Spy'. The back-story of Sir Hardy's covert glory days as a Secret Operations Executive in the military was referenced in the double-face field vests and workwear jackets that were layered heavily throughout with peak-lapelled suiting and a melange of knitwear. Pops of cobalt and brick orange twill appeared against a dark palette of charcoal and chocolate brown felt checks, while the William Haines-designed 'HA' monogram returned on a silk jacquard smoking jacket, embossed tote bags and a velvet slipper.
