Loopy stools: Aranda\Lasch unveils sculptural seating at Design Miami

Practical seating meets abstract sculpture in Aranda\Lasch’s new project ’Railing’. Unveiled this week with Gallery ALL at Design Miami, the New York based firm, famed for their in-depth interrogation of structure, have set tongues wagging with this series of useful, oscillating objects.

Stainless-steel ringlets wobble and curl into each other, raising the question of whether the primary function of the chairs is to be sat on, or admired from a distance. Each steel frame is upholstered in silicone foam and hand-sewn leather, providing a well balanced, surprisingly snug place to sit.

Reminiscent of a futuristic roller-coaster ride, or perhaps something one might find squeezed out of a tube of toothpaste, ’Railing’ takes Aranda\Lasch’s preoccupation with modularity to a new level. Testing the notion of whether a piece of furniture can function when comprised of just one continuous shape, each chair is made of a single fused pipe, creating an infinity effect. Satisfyingly, it is impossible to see where the tube begins or ends.

’Railing’ is the first full series of furniture to emerge from the firm in a number of years. ’R1’, ’R2’ and ’R3’ are just the prototypes of a growing collection from Aranda\Lasch, with more whirling furniture hotly anticipated.
