Back in stock: Giacomo Bulleri’s famous Tabaccheria relaunches in Milan
Following its recent overhaul, the historical Tabaccheria Giacomo is making a welcome return to its Milanese neighbourhood with a new round-the-clock offering.
Tabaccheria Giacomo is one of the jewels in the crown of its affable owner, Italian chef and Milanese legend Giacomo Bulleri. Bulleri, who set up shop in the city over 50 years ago in 1958 with the opening of his first restaurant 'Giacomo', has been based on Via Sottocorno since the 90s, where his small but spectacular gastronomical empire includes a restaurant, bistro, patisserie and recently revamped Tabaccheria are all a stones throw from each other.
The interior of the overhauled Tabaccheria remains, thankfully, much the same having lost none of its original character. Functioning as a cross between a traditional Italian convenience store and a Venetian wine bar - and now open from 8am to 12pm - the establishment seeks to serve everything from breakfast to after-dinner drinks in the form of light bites and aperitifs. Breakfast comes in the form of pastries from the adjacent patisserie, while classics like Tuscan soup, bread and Tomato soup, Tuscan meat sauce, sauces for croutons and fresh condiments are prepared fresh every day, to eat in or take away.
As well as the Tabaccheria's usual stock of everyday essentials, Bulleri has used his vast experience in the kitchen to hand pick a selection of more than sixty fine Italian products including anchovy sauce from Cetara, Bagnolese pecorino cheese, yellow tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes from Corbara, white truffle butter from Gubbio and fragrant extra-virgin olive oil from Spello - all beautifully packaged and proudly branded with the Giacomo logo.
