House proud
Take an exclusive journey through Airbnb's 'Sobremesa' installation at Design Miami, designed by Mexico City-based studio Pedro & Juana
For this year's Design Miami, Airbnb has bought the vibrancy of Mexico City to South Beach, enlisting Pedro & Juana to create an authentic home experience at the main exhibition site. The emerging design studio married the Mexican tradition of sobremesa – which translates to 'the time you take after lunch to continue the conversation' – with Airbnb's hosting prowess to create an interactive experience. The installation will host a week of events centred on eating, drinking and music; the public also has the opportunity to contribute to the eclectic interiors, by adding and rearranging tiles to the house-like structure's walls. 'We always look for opportunities to celebrate belonging in the design community,' says Joe Gebbia, Airbnb co-founder and CPO. In this exclusive film, Gebbia and the designers reveal how the project came together.
'Sobremesa' is on view until 4 December in the main exhibition tent of Design Miami. Meridian Avenue & 19th Street, Miami Beach
