Going 'Under' with Martina Amati
The BAFTA award-winning Italian filmmaker explores the art of freediving in an immersive new installation
Martina Amati’s latest project, an immersive multi-screen installation entitled Under, charts the artist and fellow freedivers (including record breaker Liv Philip) moving through silken turquoise-blue waters off the coast of Egypt, performing acrobatics across ‘tightropes’, and glide downwards through the depths of the Red Sea – all with a single breath of air and only a rope to guide them. Freediving may be a solitary undertaking, but it certainly doesn’t feel like a lonely one in this evocative and meditative work. Under is on view at London gallery Ambika P3 until 11 October.
