One of the oldest and most prestigious art events in the world, the Venice Biennale was established in 1885 to showcase Italian art. It has since expanded to become of the most internationally-focused exhibitions on the art calendar, often referred to as ‘the Olympics of the art world’. The Giardini houses 30 permanent national pavilions while numerous fringe exhibitions, installations and events are hosted throughout the city. Held biennially in odd-numbered years, it alternates with the Venice Architecture Biennale, which was launched in 1980 and runs in even-numbered years. The next Venice Biennale will run from 11 May – 24 November 2019.
