HangarBicocca names blockbuster line-up for new exhibition programme
When we first spoke to HangarBicocca's newly minted artistic director, Vicente Todolí, the Milan gallery was on the verge of catapulting onto the global contemporary art scene. Two years on, that momentum has showed no sign of slowing as Todolí touched down in London to reveal the gallery's ambitious 2015-2018 exhibition programme.
Nine major solo exhibitions and three special projects are set take over the unique 15,000 sq m space, which is managed and funded by Pirelli. Fresh from his dazzling outing at New York's Park Avenue Armory, the artist Philippe Parreno will kick off the proceedings with a site-specific retrospective curated by Andrea Lissoni (his last exhibition for the gallery). Parreno will be succeeded by the likes of Carsten Höller, Kishio Suga, Miroslaw Balka, Lucio Fontana and Marr Mullican in the HangarBicocca’s main exhibition space, the Navate.
In the adjoining Shed space – dedicated to solo exhibitions of young, established artists – curator Roberta Tenconi has tapped Petrit Halilaj, Laure Provost and Maria Nordman. (Of the latter’s dubious inclusion in a venue normally intended for young artists, Todolí gleefully explains that all rules were made to be broken).
Todolí stresses the importance of refreshing the gallery's appeal beyond its enviable show roster. To wit, the space hosting Anselm Kiefer’s permanent installation will soon welcome five large-scale companion pieces by the artist. Artist Céline Condorelli, meanwhile, will create a public art project in the form of urban furniture to take pride of place at the HangarBicocca’s entrance while the gallery will host an exhibition curated by architect Pierluigi Nicolin that will reflect on the relationship between architecture and art.
