Shadow play: Studio Oliver Gustav adds to 11 Howard’s design credentials in NY

We’ve already touted the many merits of 11 Howard, the Scandi-inflected hotel that opened this past spring in New York’s Soho neighbourhood. In addition to a hotly contested bar and restaurant, the downtown darling is also home to Studio Oliver Gustav, an inviting haven from the eponymous Danish interior designer.

Located off 11 Howard’s elegant lobby, Studio Oliver Gustav provides a cinematic foil to that space, with its assortment of antique, curated and self-designed products that fill a raw, exposed brick room. As the first international outpost of his studio, showroom and boutique in Copenhagen, the New York outpost is a loyal distillation of Gustav’s distinct aesthetic. Soaring antique Chinese screen doors, theatrical pieces from Faye Toogood and exquisite mirrored furniture from Vincenzo de Cotiis create a dramatic charge in the stylishly monochrome space, which is made all the more impactful by a conscious use of natural light and shadow. There are also furniture pieces, such as an oversized sofa and wooden dining table, designed by Gustav himself, that are both stoic and artisanal.

Perfectly balancing drama and serenity, the space is home to several exclusive finds, including a series of suede and stone vessels by Michael Verheyden as well as scented candles in a specially created 11 Howard scent by the Parisian company Mad et Len. With many of the offerings available in limited editions or as one-offs, don’t expect anything that catches your eye to hang around for long.
