Andaz — Scottsdale, USA
Set against the sunbaked Camelback Mountain and towering palms, the newly launched Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa is inspired by the Arizona city’s mid-century heritage, with 201 cabana-style rooms set over 23-acres.
Designed by EDG Interior Architecture + Design, the whitewashed walls and grey salvaged wood roofs of the boxy bungalows – which are called ‘studios’ – serve as perfect canvases for one-of-a-kind textile pieces by local artists and colourful modernist furniture that pays homage to the artisans of the nearby Cattle Track Arts Compound, whose works grace the walls.
The airy Guest House, designed by San Diego-based Delawie Architects, serves as the central gathering place and blurs the transparent boundary between the outdoors and the midcentury-inspired interiors. Here, chef Adam Sheff (formally of Park Hyatt New York) serves plancha grill fare at the Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen while mixologists pour local microbrews like Scottsdale Blonde kolsch as well as iced coffee on tap. No worries if you can’t peel yourself from your custom chaise-lounge to make it to the Guest House, though. The staff circulate the property on a bike pulling a nitro coffee cart.
