Brooklyn gets a welcome addition to the all-day café scene with Apollonia, a bright corner spot with a modern Mediterranean design and menu to match.
The fourth project from Danny Minch and Dylan Dodd - who are behind Brooklyn classics Walter’s, Walter Foods and Karasu, the high-design Japanese izakaya - Apollonia is the work of local studio Space Exploration Design, who transformed a dark space with black floors and ceilings into a light and airy venue that invites people to linger from morning to night over shareable plates like whipped feta and lamb ribs.
Inspired by the colours and materials of Greece and Sicily, they introduced a warm and bright palette of cream, terra-cotta, and mineral blue complemented by rich accents of oak, green marble, unlacquered copper and one-off features like custom ceramic sconces in the dining room – a collaboration with ANK Ceramics – and linear bar sconces crafted by Cargo Collective fabricator Mitchell Dose. Bar stools were also a custom design, while the dining chairs are in the style of Marcel Breuer’s classic 'Cesca'.
In addition to the main dining room, which features furnished built-in banquettes, they developed a leftover space demarcated by a curved portal to create an annex that will also be used for rotating art shows by the local community.
