Mason Pattaya — Pattaya, Thailand

In certain circles, when it comes to a sun, sand and sea holiday, Pattaya tends to get short shrift. All bets are off though with the arrival of the sleek Mason Pattaya where Bangkok-based VaSLab Architecture has sprinkled 35 one- and two-storey villas across a lush tropical landscape dominated by views of Pattaya Bay.
The rooms shy from Thai design tropes, opting, instead, for a Brutalist palette of grey washed concrete, angular lines, and sharp-edged ceiling cut-outs that cast diffused light into the bathroom, alongside stone and wood decorative pieces by Bangkok-based Dong Sculpture. Particularly covetable are the hand-cut vases by the local Angsila community of stone masons.
The nearby town of Na Jomtien, meanwhile, features beaches and local weekend markets, but head chef Songwut Monthirakanok conspires to keep guests happily house-bound with a pomelo salad studded with crisp coconut shards and spicy shrimp, and grilled fish mousse scented with Thai herbs.
