Yourta is a new brand of handmade yurts that blends centuries of craft tradition with contemporary design for a unique, portable sanctuary that can be used as an at-home retreat or innovative outdoor event space.
The yurt traditon
For Yourta, creating yurts for a modern, urban consumer requires an exacting adherence to the methods and materials of generations past.
Every element of the Yourta yurt is handmade by craftsmen on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. This includes the resilient willow tree frame that is stream-bent to create the ribs and beams of the yurt structure, and then covered by a handwoven wool felt exterior capable of withstanding almost any kind of environment.
Other features include decorated bands that secure the wool exterior to the frame, colourful tassels that hang from beams, traditional mats and down cushions for an enveloping, comfortable atmosphere.
A modern aesthetic
Yourta has commissioned celebrated Kazakh designer Assel Nussipkozhanova to design these various elements and lend them a contemporary aesthetic twist. Her designs come in two varieties – the minimal ‘Serenity’ or the more decorative ‘Joy’, which features a wealth of flowing abstract designs.
The potential uses for these yurts extends far beyond the camping tent alternative.
With three sizes that can accommodate up to 30, 60, or 150 people, Yourta yurts can be used as guest accommodation or a cabin alternative in a garden or backyard, an outdoor event space such as a location for weddings or parties, a calming treatment room for spas, or a portable retreat.
All in all, these yurts are a contemporary testament to the ingenious engineering and craft traditions that have gone into making yurts for thousands of years.
As the brand’s founder Dameli Kaliyeva says, ‘We might not be able to travel far physically all the time, but when you enter a Yourta yurt it’s as if you enter a different world. I am so proud of our craftspeople and designer, and the faith they have shown in bringing Yourta to life, as we take the Kyrgyz yurt and traditions across the world.’
