Bedknobbings and room service: welcome to Hotel Wallpaper*
Welcome to The Handmade Issue, our annual celebration of the marriage of fine craftsmanship and contemporary design.
Each year since 2010, Wallpaper* Handmade has brought together the world’s sharpest creative minds and manufacturing talents to create one-of-a-kind pieces: furniture, fittings, fashion, foodstuffs and more. This year, inspired by our love of jet-setting, we decided on a theme of travel and hospitality, and set out to create the ultimate home away from home for the design-savvy traveller – welcome to Hotel Wallpaper*.
Exhibited first in April during Milan’s Salone Del Mobile, showstoppers included Jean Nouvel’s shiny aluminium entrance, Wonmin Park’s monumental marble reception desk, Glenn Sestig’s brutalist bar, André Fu’s lavish water cabin, David Chipperfield’s always-at-hand ‘Butler’ stand, Carlo Brandelli’s artfully angular valet and Victoria Wilmotte’s statement brass bell (our newsstand cover star). Of course, copies of Wallpaper* were readily available, displayed on a Ferris wheel magazine rack designed by the late and great Vladimir Kagan, whose sketches appear on our limited-edition cover.
Like every good hotelier, we’ve been hard at work coming up with a menu of amenities and services to wow our guests. With artisanal tongue placed firmly in handcrafted cheek and using carefully curated, ethically sourced algorithms, with seasonal, single-origin data, we came up with the following:
Locally sourced chambermaids
A nose-to-tail butler service
Pre-arrival feng shui, vastu shastra and gluten exorcism
A suitcase unpacking strategist
Ethically sourced porn
Artisanal wake-up calls
Handcrafted turndown technicians
A shampoo sommelier
A gender neutral minibar
Heritage air conditioning
Emission-free shoe-shine service
Multi-platform lift service
An associate lobby innovator
A luggage orchestrator
Cold-filtered, ethically sourced Rocky Mountain oxygen supplements
An in-room hydroponic herb garden
Microaggression-free bedtime stories
A sustainable cold-pressed trouser press
Responsible TV defenestration lessons
Regretfully, breakfast is not included.
