Winner of several awards including Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Lone Star Festival, ‘Visual Acoustics – The Modernism of Julius Shulman’ is an elegant, considered and unreservedly lavish exposé of the most prolific architectural photographer of our time.

Intimate, insightful and aesthetically astute – Shulman’s unique photographic depictions of buildings by the likes of Frank Gehry, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe were key in Modernism’s stellar ascension to 20th century architectural dominance.

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman and directed by Eric Bricker, ‘Visual Acoustics’ is as concerned with Shulman’s work as it is with the man himself – a dedicated humanist and architectural advocate up until his death earlier this year. Bricker’s exposé provides a fitting epitaph for this art-world monolith. One to watch.

Ellie Stathaki is the Architecture & Environment Director at Wallpaper*. She trained as an architect at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and studied architectural history at the Bartlett in London. Now an established journalist, she has been a member of the Wallpaper* team since 2006, visiting buildings across the globe and interviewing leading architects such as Tadao Ando and Rem Koolhaas. Ellie has also taken part in judging panels, moderated events, curated shows and contributed in books, such as The Contemporary House (Thames & Hudson, 2018), Glenn Sestig Architecture Diary (2020) and House London (2022).
