South Congress Hotel — Austin, USA
Joining the clutch of design-led hotels and eateries south of Lady Bird Lake, architectural powerhouse Michael Hsu has added to his portfolio of over 200 projects in Austin, a city that is positively booming. Here Hsu worked with Dick Clark + Associates and Studio MAI to assimilate eating, shopping and sleeping into one complex of which this 83-roomed hotel is part.
Decked out with custom-made Matteo linens, draped felt headboards, brass basins in the bathrooms and some more craftsy elements like Mexicana fabric coat hangers by Denmark-based HAY, the accomplished rooms and suites have answered the city’s cry for stylish digs. Photography in the public areas by Hunter S Thompson sits alongside works by local artists such as Hallie Brewer and Catherine Dudley and terracotta tiles sourced locally adorn the floors.
The complex will certainly attract a tattooed and bearded crowd, who’ll come for the poolside views of Austin’s skyline, an Ancho Margarita in-hand, the fresh take on Texan dining by Michael Paley at Café No Sé (don't miss the parmesan-crusted chicken schnitzel with bitter green salad), or to drool over the vintage machines at the popular vintage motorcycle hub Revival Cycles on the ground floor. But then again, with an establishment as refined as this on their doorstep, who’d blame them.
