Lasvit ‘Sanctums’ exhibition set to light up Milan
‘Sanctums’, a new presentation by spatial concept company Lasvit, is a hot ticket for Milan Design Week 2022
In partnership with Lasvit
Lasvit, the Czech-based global leader in creating daring and unique spatial and lighting experiences, returns to Milan Design Week 2022 with a dazzling exhibition of conceptual work. Embracing a singular mission to ‘uplift everyone’ through its breathtaking spatial experiences, the company regularly collaborates with an array of creative partners, including the Campana brothers, Kengo Kuma, Nendo and Ross Lovegrove, to conceive glass collections of uninhibited artistry and unparalleled craftsmanship.
For Milan Design Week, Lasvit’s ‘Sanctums’ exhibition, curated by Lasvit art director Maxim Velčovský, showcases brand-new ideas, including ‘A:Live’, a kinetic, modular glass art installation by Stefan Mihailović, and a collection of lighting installations created by emerging talents as well as world-renowned designers such as Yabu Pushelberg and David Rockwell.
‘A:Live’ by Stefan Mihailović
‘A:Live’ was first launched last year as a virtual design concept, but can now be appreciated in real life, presented as part of an immersive and interactive theatre experience complete with actors and live performers.
‘We want our installations, artworks, collections and places to make spaces for our clients that not only evoke beautiful feelings, but that can caress the soul,’ says Lasvit owner and president Leon Jakimič. ‘With “Sanctums”, we want to show how light makes space and how space makes feeling.’
‘Sanctums’ exhibition highlights
‘Cirrus’ by Yabu Pushelberg
Inspired by a cloud genus that consists of fine, thin, almost translucent wisps of water vapour that create a romantic, overhead spectacle, the ‘Cirrus’ installation was created by Yabu Pushelberg as a sophisticated array of glass clouds for Lasvit Art Walls. ‘The glass screen system is brought to life by panes of clouded glass affixed to a freestanding vertical rail, giving the impression of layered organic shapes and hues floating in space,’ say design duo Yabu Pushelberg. ‘With its soft, imperfect radiuses and wide array of moody hues, “Cirrus” stands as a thoughtful interpretation of its namesake cloud genus. The glass structure of the “Cirrus” wall also took inspiration from ice crystals, which naturally form real cirrus clouds.’
‘A:Live’ by Stefan Mihailović
Inspiring a dialogue on constant, kinetic, forward motion, ‘A:Live’ represents movement as an integral part of life. In perpetual motion, the glass modular kinetic installation is the brainchild of Stefan Mihailović, a member of Lasvit’s design team. With a set of simple movements, it creates endlessly complex and ever-developing compositions.
‘Frames’ by Mária Čulenová Hostinová
Creating windows of imagination through light art, ‘Frames’ by Mária Čulenová Hostinová is a gateway into our imagination. Symbolising desires and dreams, its unique, spatial concept creates playful, interior compositions. ‘‘‘Frames tells the story of our dreams and experiences transferred to glass,’” says Čulenová Hostinová, head of the Lasvit design team.
‘Icons’ by Lasvit
Lasvit is also showcasing its lighting and glassware collections. In addition to the well-known Lasvit ‘Icons’ – its signature designs, such as ‘Herbarium’ and ‘Midsummer’, the company will also present other designs including ‘Cipher’ by Yabu Pushelberg, ‘Globe Metro’ by Cyril Dunděra, ‘Volcano’ by Maxim Velčovský, ‘Spacey’ by Lukáš Novák, and ‘Neverending Glory’ by Jan Plecháč and Henry Wielgus.
‘Constellation’ by David Rockwell
New York City’s shimmering night sky and the celestial landscape depicted in the iconic ceiling mural at Grand Central Terminal inspired David Rockwell’s new lighting collection for Lasvit. The ‘Constellation’ series offers three lighting models – a horizontal lighting fixture, a wall sconce, and a floor lamp, representing the constellations of Cassiopeia, Orion’s Belt and Polaris, respectively, and bringing the light of distant stars down to earth.
‘Upside Down’ by Boris Klimek
Designer Boris Klimek created the ‘Upside Down’ lighting concept, which combines the simple and the spectacular, the aesthetics of glamorous chandeliers with plain cables and bare bulbs.
‘Hidden Light’ by Jan Plecháč and Henry Wielgus
This is a collection inspired by the medium of light itself. After experimenting with the various facets of light and exploring its significance in our lives, Jan Plecháč and the Lasvit atelier developed the idea of transcendent light caught in the prison of an imaginary cage.
‘Glissade’ by Yabu Pushelberg
Created by Yabu Pushelberg and Lasvit’s glass masters during three years of development and technical innovation, the ‘Glissade’ glassware collection perfects an intricate arrangement of angles, curves and textures that faithfully evoke steep, snow-covered mountain slopes.
‘Symboll’ by Lasvit and Llev
A first for the glassmaking industry, ‘Symboll’ is a sustainable glassware collection shaped by the natural processes of mycelium growth. In an innovative approach, developed with Prague-based design studio Llev, the root-like structure of fungal colonies, consisting of thread-like hyphae, is used to make the moulds into which glass is blown.
