Boutique hotels these days are much more than a place to overnight. The new wave come with extras: the lobby-cum-workspace, the hip events programme, the neighbourhood guide and full-tilt social media campaign. Back in 2006, The Hoxton Shoreditch was ahead of the curve on all this, and now it’s taken its fashionable formula to Amsterdam. For its European debut, the brand chose four historic merchants’ houses lining the Herengracht and Singel canals. Local studio Nicemakers have given the interiors a savvy sense of place, taking inspiration for the colours from the Rijksmuseum and using locally crafted furnishings, such as David Derksen and Lex Pott’s mirrors, and vintage pieces trawled from Noordermarkt. The 111 rooms are spread over five floors and like all Hoxton hotels good value for such a location. On the ground floor, the all-day Italian restaurant Lotti’s, co-run with Soho House, has a retractable glass roof, and there’s also a conservatory – just the place for a witbier while you pore over your laptop.
