New Orleans might be most famed for its historic French Quarter, but in the Marigny, an equally historic albeit more residential neighbourhood, there are plenty of treasures to behold as well. One in particular is the recently opened Hotel Peter & Paul, an elegant property that consists of four separate buildings – a church, rectory, schoolhouse and convent – all dating back to the 19th century. The structures, which long served as a cornerstone in Marigny’s community, have been restored and converted by local firm studioWTA, into a stylish, evocative hotel, that’s designed and operated by Ash NYC, together with local resident and former travel writer Nathalie Jordi.

Inspired by iconic religious paintings and tapestries from the 14th to 18th centuries in Europe and Africa, Ash NYC created a textural pastiche of gingham print, antique chandeliers, and custom-designed rugs that have been made in India, along with quirky accents such as sculpted hand-shaped light sconces and trompe l’oeil murals, for the hotel. Together with the building’s original features, which include cypress wood mouldings, marble fireplaces, wainscoted corridors and soaring floor-to-ceiling French windows, the hotel is an evocative mix of old and new that perfectly encapsulates the magic and myth, which runs through the city.

In its new incarnation, the property now has rooms located in the schoolhouse and convent, while the church itself has been restored to serve as a venue for events, such as exhibitions and social gatherings. The rectory is home to The Elysian Bar, which offers niche wines and signature cocktails, alongside a menu of small plates made from local ingredients. Open to both guests and residents of New Orleans, it doles out moreish fare throughout the day.
