Deciding that a shopping experience should feel like conducting an experiment, Tokujin Yoshioka designed Issey Miyake's Reality Lab (opens in new tab) to reflect the appearance of a colourful laboratory. The three-storey shop sits on an Aoyama street dominated by Miyake boutiques – including the adjoining 132 5 store.
Inside, concrete walls contrast with aluminium panelling in blue and green and long workbench tables display product. The minimal design evokes a clinical simplicity, allowing shoppers to focus on Miyake's mathematical designs. Reality Lab. showcases the Homme Plisse, Bao Bao, In-Ei and 132 5. lines, along with clothing and accessories made from traditional papers from Tohoku, Japan.
