Brunello Cucinelli’s Opera collection spins a good yarn
The luxury Italian label's chunky jumpers and cardigans have us nurturing the knitting needles

Chunky, patterned alpine knits have a tendency to conjure up images of 1980s ski trips, sipping eggnog, or kitsch art teacher attire. But that Italian master of fabrication Brunello Cucinelli has tapped into A/W 2019's penchant for artisanal details, and instead given a luxe, handcrafted lift to this winter fireside essential.
We can't wait to snuggle up in jumpers and cardigans from the Umbria-based fashion house's Opera collection, which are woven by hand using fine natural yarns, such as cashmere, combined with silk, alpaca, mohair or sparkling Lurex, in a minimal colour palette. Featuring patterns inspired by ancient Nordic intarsia knitting styles, we're longing for the days to get even chillier.

The highlights from Pitti Uomo 94 in Florence
Rain was omnipresent at Pitti Uomo 94. The outerwear brand Herno celebrated its 70th year with a vast exhibition that began with an installation of a single drop of rain; MCM showed ready-to-wear and accessories in Florence for the first time in a dynamic runway presentation that featured a tropical storm. The red and blue carpeted catwalk at Paul Surridge’s debut Roberto Cavalli Menswear show was absolutely sodden, which added an eccentric mood to the otherwise fine, fresh clothes. After all, what’s summer without the threat of a downpour? Elsewhere, the classic brands who have built their heritage on modish, Made in Italy élan are having conversations about what they can learn from the advance of streetwear: it’s time for a rethink they say.
