Paper view: Thisispaper opens flagship store in a former Soviet dental studio

Distinguished online by their love of neutral colour palettes and clean lines, Polish design website Thisispaper began its life in 2011 as an online magazine covering everything from architecture to fashion. Its founders, interior designer Zuzanna Gasior and graphic designer Alexander Zaharov, quickly grew the concept to include a printed magazine, an online store and, most recently, a bricks and mortar flagship next to their studio in Warsaw.
Occupying a former Soviet-era dental clinic, the new store sells Thisispaper’s own products alongside Polish books and Japanese tea. The new flagship is the studio’s first interior project and draws upon Gasior’s background in interior design.
A dark resin floor, white washed walls and birch plywood fixtures form a serene backdrop, while a freestanding white plywood shelving system, specially designed in collaboration with Polish design studio Tylko, spans the back wall. Another highlight is the Dieter Ram’s Braun Audio 1 Stereo, which enables the customers to listen to the studio’s selected vinyl.
The Thisispaper store is the latest in a slew of exciting new architecture and interiors projects to emerge in the Polish capital as the city’s design scene develops. ‘It's developed rapidly,’ explains Gasior. ‘The young designers have a strong consciousness of their abilities. Although you must know that Polish ground is not an easy one from the economic point of view, because the Polish market is still developing and it's not formed enough to absorb all of those designers and their products. That might be also a reason why we are so stubborn and visible outside our borders.’
