Edra takes the sofa in a more flexible new direction – give it a spin
With the ‘Anywhere’ sofa by Francesco Binfaré, presented at Milan Design Week and complete with rotating backrests, the brand pushes the boundaries of modular design
In Partnership With Edra
Brilliant design doesn’t always need to be taken literally. Abstract ideas can be just as formative, shaping a brand’s identity as much as function or material – and this is where Edra excels. With the ‘Anywhere’ sofa, the Italian house translates an intuitive concept of comfort into a system that is both fluid and precise.
A ‘Smart Cushion' mechanism allows the backrests to move
Designed by Francesco Binfaré, the piece continues a decades-long dialogue between designer and brand. Born and raised in Milan, Binfaré has built his career around research-driven design, often operating at the intersection of art direction and product development. His relationship with Edra began in 1992, when then art director Massimo Morozzi invited him to collaborate – an exchange that would go on to define some of the company’s most experimental work.
With ‘Anywhere’ – revealed at Milan Design Week 2026 – Binfaré reconsiders the very notion of seating. Rather than a fixed object, the sofa becomes a flexible space to inhabit – one that adapts intuitively to the body, a user’s habits, and its surroundings. Movement and transformation are as key to the design as softness.
At the core of the design is Edra’s patented ‘Smart Cushion’ mechanism, which allows the backrests to be adjusted with minimal effort. Rotating on discreet pivots, they can be guided into multiple positions, altering the depth, angle and orientation of the seat. The result is a responsive system that accommodates a range of postures – from upright for conversation to laidback for repose – without ever feeling mechanical.
The modular design offers ultimate flexibility
The sofa’s flexibility extends to its possibilities in terms of arrangement. Described by Binfaré as ‘composable’ rather than simply modular, its individual elements can be arranged freely or used independently. It may function as a solitary chaise longue in a more intimate setting, or expand into a broader, more architectural landscape within larger interiors.
Elements can be freely arranged and the backrests angled as desired
Visually, the ‘Anywhere’ sofa maintains a sense of quiet dynamism. Its sinuous backrests suggest movement, whether the elements are configured in a continuous or fragmented form. Available in a wide selection of Edra textiles, from intricate weaves to more tactile finishes, it adapts not only in form but in character.
In this way, ‘Anywhere’ encapsulates a broader philosophy – one that has long defined Edra’s approach. Design is not imposed, but evolves; not static, but responsive. The sofa becomes less an object than an environment, shaped as much by the user as by the designer, with infinite possibilities of use.
