The Barcelona Edition — Barcelona, Spain
In its rise to Europe’s foremost cultural capital, Barcelona’s welcoming of an Edition hotel feels like a long overdue match between two icons. Located in El Born, the city’s historical and creative epicentre, The Barcelona EDITION stands tall over the Santa Caterina Market, after the former office space was radically transformed by Carlos Ferrater Studio into a geometric glass-fronted facade that mirrors the gothic architecture surrounding it. Throughout the property, mastermind Ian Schrager’s creative direction comes to life with acclaimed interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán creating a signature Edition space that rewrites its understated luxury with a unique injection of Catalan heritage.
Entering the double-height lobby, contemporary and classic design is mixed, with pieces from the likes of Eric Schmitt and Christian Liaigre, to Dalí and Gaudí. Locals and visitors alike dine here at Bar Veraz, flaunting a menu by Sebastián Mazzola, behind the city’s Pakta and Tickets restaurants. And though you’ll likely want to catch a drink at The Roof, the 10th-floor terrace with unprecedented views across the skyline, the hotel’s Punch Room is where nights are not to be missed. Ascending a marble and wood spiral staircase into a room of leather and velvet furniture, nights run late with a punch menu bringing back the once-lost drinks style in a variety of options.
If you’re staying the night, rooms breathe the telltale trademarks for which Schrager has become so well known, with warm accents coming through in the leather headboards and walnut wood panelling, complemented against whitened oak herringbone parquet floors. Even if just for a nightcap, the latest offering from EDITION is definitely one you’ll want to check in to when next in the Catalan capital.
