If the calibre of restaurants lining Laugavegur, downtown Reykjavik's commercial artery, is any indication, the city's food scene is certainly thriving. The newest kid on the block is Eirkisson Brasserie, an all-day dining room that once housed a bank, which Milan-based Design Group Italia has now re-imagined as a contemporary take on a traditional French brasserie.

A base palette of warm woods and grey stone is highlighted with bespoke furnishings and accessories in green Dedar velvet hues and bold brass details that add a bit of sparkle while seamlessly transforming the space from day to night. Flexible custom-designed black-wire dividers create a sense of privacy and smartly adapts the space to the number of guests, while downstairs, the original vault has been transformed into a private dining room and cellar, housing a stellar wine collection.

The owner, Friðgeir Ingi Eiríksson, who was previously the head chef at Domaine de Clairefontaine, a Michelin star restaurant just outside of Lyon, serves a modern European menu with a focus on Italian cooking. Don't miss out on the tuna tartar with lime and avocado or the deliciously comforting gnocchi topped with parmesan and fresh truffles. For breakfast or lunch, make sure to perch at the bar, which lines the street-side window, where delicious smoked salmon, spinach and poached egg plates are accompanied by a good dose of people watching.
