Amba Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan
A cool alternative to the flashy neon of downtown, amba Taipei Ximending - Taipei's first boutique hotel - is a collaboration between two of Taiwan's sharpest creative talents: architect Grace Cheung of xrange and interior designer Eugene Yeh. Cheung's 12-metre-high foyer, encased in a silver-fringe curtain, sets the whimsical tone. A lift opens to the fifth-floor lobby, decorated with rustic wood benches and vintage leather sofas, its high ceilings exposed. The all-day café doubles as a wireless workplace for creatives, who can rendezvous in the gallery, atrium or, by night, the music lounge. Let's not forget the 162 rooms, with streamlined, eco-friendly interiors and high-end bath products made with local organic ginger.

El Bandido, Bogotá, Colombia
Colombia has done much to leave its bad-boy image behind. The capital's latest obsession is its burgeoning restaurant scene, currently ruled by El Bandido Bistro, sister to the popular rooftop bar, El Coq. Architect and owner Felipe Rodriguez along with interior designer Mariana Vieira raided the flea markets and antique stores of Buenos Aires for vintage tiles and second-hand Charles and Ray Eames pieces to give the restaurant its modern, festive feel. Rodriguez's musical hero, Nicolas Jaar, provided the inspiration for the name with his melodic, blue-wave dance track 'El Bandido del Amo' ('The Love Bandit')

34, London UK
London's Mayfair neighbourhood has another Martin Brudnizki restaurant to follow in the footsteps of The Ivy, Scott's and Le Caprice. Located off Grosvenor Square, 34 reminds us of a colonial steakhouse with its French shutters, mahogany accents and leather banquettes. Every detail - from the hand-blown glass sconces to the bar's grained millwork - was designed exclusively. 'I drew inspiration from early-20th-century interiors,' says Brudnizki, 'so I introduced Edwardian and Deco details.' Notwithstanding, walls are covered in contemporary art from Phillip Allen, Sophie von Hellerman, Neil Tait and others. An Argentinean charcoal grill serves grass-fed Scottish, Argentinean and Australian beef, seasonal game and seafood

The Cube, by Electrolux, Milan, Italy
Electrolux has long been in the restaurant business - if you consider its machines fill half of Europe's Michelin-star kitchens. But now it's taking its first steps into hospitality. Its new roving restaurant the Cube will tour Milan, Stockholm, London and Moscow this year, setting up at a prime location in each city and hosting team of chefs cooking for a communal table of 18. The appliances will be on view, but the chefs - and the spectacular views - will be the real entertainment. The Milan visit runs through 26 April (lunch €200; dinner €275) at Piazza del Duomo

Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Israel
The chef who put contemporary Israeli cuisine on the map has opened a new Tel Aviv restaurant. Star chef Haim Cohen's fresh, inventive way with Jewish, Kurdish, Turkish and even French flavours translates to a menu of simple, original dishes like dalal calamari with seared fennel and caramelized tabun, chopped salad with sardines and Parmesan, and veal sweetbreads with yellow polenta sauce. Israeli architects Baranowitz Kronenberg designed the space in concrete and decorated with Turkish carpets telling the story of old Jaffa. Tall wood shutters reduce the intense Middle Eastern light that seeps through floor-to-ceiling windows to the Piet Hein Eek furniture

Microbrewery, Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai
At 2,000 square metres, The Cook the Meet and the Brew is a veritable emporium, imagined in three stages by Shangri-La at its new Kerry Hotel Pudong, in Shanghai. Marcos Cain of Dubai's Stickman Design has brought cohesion to the space. Seating at 'the Meet' is defined by rows of red-glass buffalo-horn chandeliers and a towering fireplace adorned with bull's-head trophies. Restaurant 'the Cook' has 13 food stations dressed in vintage driftwood and teak. Still, China's first microbrewery is the real draw, offering six craft beers homemade on site. The novel 'flying brewery', with its tangle of water pipes, filters and fermenters, is quite a conversation-starter.

Hôtel du Marc, Reims, France
This neo-classical chateau in Reims has been in the Clicquot family since its construction in 1840. Now a hotel overseen by luxury group LVMH, Hôtel du Marc was given a recent facelift by Bruno Moinard's 4BI, designer of Cartier boutiques worldwide. Moinard gave the five-room mansion rich, modern elements - a smoky-crystal chandelier, custom Murano-glass doorknobs, gold-leaf inlays - which, when combined with the hotel's original furniture, give it a dramatic yet entirely fresh look. Pablo Reinoso offered his sinuous spaghetti bench. Mathieu Lehanneur contributed his 'Once Upon a Dream' daybed. The finished product is a lesson in French elegance

Ignis Vinothek beim Hauptplatz, Linz, Germany
The first project by creative duo Christoph March and Marek Gut of the young interiors firm March Gut is an oenophile's fantasy. Ignis Vinothek Beim Hauptplatz is a contemporary foil for its setting, the historic Linzer Hauptplatz, its original walls left refreshingly raw against angular oak furnishings. The collaboration with architect Herwig Bartosch is the result of a brief from winemaker Clemens Strobl, so unsurprisingly the bar is a highlight. Knowledgable staff serve from a cellar of over 1000 international wines dating back to 1870 - plus a nouveau-Austrian menu that provides a welcome addition to tipsy evenings

Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa, Easter Island, Chile
We like to travel far, especially when the destination is a veritable paradise. So when we heard about Hangaroa Eco Village on Easter Island, we had to make the trip. Nestled in the southwest of this remote Polynesian island, the resort takes its cues from the stone village of Orongo, whose ruins can be seen around the Rano Kau volcano. The lobby recalls an ancient Rapa Nui boathouse and connects to an outdoor museum displaying ruins and archeological treasures. The 75 cave-like rooms are furnished in contemporary style and equipped with wireless Internet and sea-view terraces. The round dining room, featuring rustic pine-twig ceilings, has exceptional ocean views

Yas Viceroy, Abu Dhabi
The already highly distinctive Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi recently emerged from a Viceroy makeover that has upgraded the staff and transformed the lobby into a sleek meeting place. The rebranded Yas Viceroy Hotel commissioned design group Poltrona Frau Emirates to redesign the common spaces. They've also remodelled the two popular in-house restaurants, Angar and Noodle Bar, and added a floor of executive club suites with tailored, neutral-toned furnishings, luxurious bath suites and special access to private lounges. The pool, under a halo of latticework, is a sight to behold

La Bohème, Porto, Portugal
Knotted-pine beams and a wood-slat motif resembling a giant record cabinet delineate the two spaces at La Bohème, Porto's newest -- and possibly first - wine bar. Boss Paulo Dantas owns two music clubs in the city, which may have inspired the design by AVA Architects, but this place is really about the region's world-famous wine and port. It's served with tapas-sized portions of traditional Portuguese dishes like 'caldo verde' soup with potato and chorizo, and 'alheira' smoked-game sausage with lemon chutney. It's no surprise the raw space has a rocking soundtrack -- and it doesn't hurt that it's steps from one of Porto's most famous sights: Torre dos Clérigos
