June 2019 Issue

SUBSCRIBE

Welcome to our June issue, where our newsstand cover feature is a cerebral, CMYK colour-defying shoot from Wallpaper* interiors stylist Maria Sobrino and photographer Tommaso Sartori. With all the colours created in camera, it’s unique, powerful and a joy to behold.

Meanwhile, our limited-edition subscribers’ cover previews Isaac Julien’s Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement, his multi-screen study of the visionary architect, ahead of its premiere at Victoria Miro London on 7 June. Having had the great pleasure of visiting Bo Bardi’s Casa de Vidro in São Paulo in 2010 when shooting our Brazil issue (W*135), it’s wonderful to be transported back there, if only on page.

From Brazil to the Venice Art Biennale. We preview Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s ambitious show, ‘Dysfunctional’, which includes debut designs by Virgil Abloh – who trained as an engineer before entering the world of fashion – as well as new work from Michèle Lamy, Vincenzo De Cotiis, the Verhoeven Twins, Studio Drift, Mathieu Lehanneur, Maarten Baas and Atelier van Lieshout. We also visit artist Eva Rothschild in her studio ahead of her installation at the Irish Pavilion, and get a sneak preview of creative catalyst Liz Swig’s cameo jewellery designs by artists Cindy Sherman and Catherine Opie.

We check out the under-construction M+ museum in Hong Kong by Herzog & de Meuron; followed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s post-High Line promenade The Tide on London’s Greenwich Peninsula. We visit the Tomáš Baťa Memorial, honouring the ideals of a modernist-minded Czech magnate, and tour Celine’s two newest Paris stores, designed by creative director Hedi Slimane and showcasing contemporary art from the likes of Oscar Tuazon, Rindon Johnson and Shawn Kuruneru.

Over to our Travel & Transport special: we take a tour of Virgin’s first cruise ship and a spin in the newest electric cars – zero-emission driving for the technology-enabled customer. Having built up an appetite, we dish up the finest food-on-the-go with a side serving of suitably tasty accessories, and celebrate Ace Hotel turning 20 years old!

And finally, for the latest in our Subscribers Since… 1996 series, we feature John Pawson’s home collection of Wallpaper* magazines. Enjoy!

Sarah Douglas, Editor-in-Chief
