Born in Punjab in 1934, Raj Rewal is a leading figure on the Indian architecture scene, a stature he has achieved not through grand statements or the use of cutting edge materials and construction methods but through his holistic approach to his trade. Educated in Delhi and London, he set up his eponymous practice in New Delhi over 35 years ago. His projects, which range from private homes and social housing schemes all the way to government buildings like New Delhi’s Parliament Library – are always in synch with climate, culture and context, and are distinct for their complex geometric forms. Among his accolades are a Gold Medal from Indian Institute of Architects and the Robert Matthew Award from the Commonwealth Associations of Architects. Here, he hangs his Wallspace with photographs of the things that amuse, inform and inspire him.
