'For me it's important to use specific filmic techniques, such as steady cam, focus pulls and editing in a way that doesn't completely submerge the viewer, but gives them enough room to think about what they are experiencing,' says Thomas Lock. Architecture, texture, spatial and temporal recreation are common threads that can be traced through his work -- which he describes as 'between film and video art' -- and nowhere more so than in 'Body Dysfunctional'. 'I shot the film on 35mm film and worked with Technicolor on the processing and special effects,' explains Lock. 'The film is a study of an abandoned children's hospital in Hackney. The camera - guided by the architecture of the children's hospital - moves though many rooms revealing an impossible journey.' He's currently working on a video installation using footage recorded around bunkers on the north coast of France - a project entirely in keeping with his natural gravitation toward 'non-places, or places that humans have inhabited then left behind.'
Most inspired by: I tend to like particular pieces of work at certain stages of peoples careers. Anthony McCall's Between You and I, Susan Hiller's Psi Girls, Jim O'Rourke's Bad Timing, Gus Van Sant's Elephant.
