An appropriately well-heeled restaurant has just opened in the swish Beverly Hills department store, Barneys New York. Called Freds, the smart assembly of clean lines is down to Steven Harris Architects, while interior design outfit Rees Roberts + Partners offset the modern minimalism with plush touches, including a sleek greige onyx bar. Of course, the fare is no slouch either. Executive chef Mark Strausman, who also helms the restaurant’s New York and Chicago locations, works closely with local suppliers to offer a seasonal menu with a Californian spin. We recommend the Beverly Hills Club, stuffed with shrimp, crab, avocado and bacon, or a raw vegan cashew ‘cheese’ dip, served with sliced fennel, celery and carrots. To complete it all, the staff don uniforms by local clothing label Band of Outsiders and shoes by footwear brand Common Projects.
