Adding to the echo of slurps throughout the capital is the first British outpost of Ippudo, a Japanese ramen specialist with restaurants in New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney. Despite its location in Renzo Piano’s Central St Giles complex near Covent Garden, Ippudo embraces Japanese tradition with gusto. The 80-cover space — designed by Japanese designers ‘Yan’ in collaboration with London’s Stiff + Trevillion — is punctuated with reams of minimal glass and chrome, a Fuji mountain feature wall and traditional Taiko drums imported from Japan. A succinct ramen-focused menu centres on variations of Ippudo’s famed tonkotsu pork broth, alongside a selection of sushi and hirata buns, while the free-standing bar’s offering of Japanese sake, shochu and beer is worth a visit alone.
